Looking after our people
In order to put our customers first we must also look after our people. So far we have invested in Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) training for two groups of first aiders.
Mental ill health costs UK employers an estimated £34.9 billion each year – the equivalent of £1,300 for every employee in the UK workforce. This figure is the result of several reasons – sickness absence, reduced productivity and staff turnover. We have taken some simple but significant steps in tackling the management of mental health.
Mental Health First Aid does not teach people to be therapists. It is the equivalent of a physical first aid course and teaches people how to spot the signs of a mental health issue and feel confident providing initial help. Our MHFAs attend a two-day training course and are well placed to help colleagues by providing information on how they can look after their mental wellbeing and where to access services and support. Examples of ways a MHFA trained person may provide support include: directing the Willmott Dixon employee to the Employee Care Service; referring them to the Willmott Dixon Occupational Health Team; recommending an external support service; or simply having a friendly chat reassuring a person that help is available. All of these actions are only made with the consent of the individual.
Our midlands region currently has 21 active MHFAs.
